Lahmacun base

Lahmacun base

Our studio is located inside Kazán, a space located in the 8th district of Budapest, on the edge of a former factory, in a multi-cultural (and mostly poor) neighborhood. Kazán gives a home to various culturally and socially active projects such as media, art, economy, sport and even a kindergarten.

We also close neighbors with Gólya, which is a pub, a café, a concert hall, a club, and a cultural hub. Our club nights at Gólya are legendary 🙂

We fight dehydration by giving chilled Békanő and Wostock to our show hosts while working inside the 22m2 purple Lahmacun studio.

Show hosts & collabs

Show hosts & collabs

Lahmacun radio covers different subcultures of the capital city of Hungary and it also involves numerous international show hosts, such as from Brussels, Edinburgh, Berlin, San Francisco, Belgrade, and others. Also, we directly cooperate with other web radios such as with Periszkóp Rádió (Hungary), Radio Kapital (Poland) and Cashmere radio (Germany), and recently also with IDA radio though the Easterndaze x Berlin: Community Radio Week project. The project included a week-long collaborative programming (including swapping shows and moderators) and ended in a live broadcast session and a panel talk about the issue of community radios.

We are very proud of our compilations with original tracks from our show hosts and other producers from our network. Specifically, we had We are Lahmacun – 1st Year for our first birthday, the KKH Support Compilation 20 VA to help Kazán in the midst of the pandemic and another, the Dalmata Daniel eats Lahmacun compilation, where Budapest’s Dalmata Daniel record label supported us generously.

Events

Events

We throw parties! These are support events for the radio, usually circling around specific music genres and/or topics, where we try to get our show hosts involved. Also, a big tradition for us is to host a special New Year’s Eve live-show day (see the 2019 and 2020 occasions).

During the pandemic, the radio contributed to the OFF Biennálé online fundraising party and also worked with the UH Fest 2020 music festival. We also attended festivals: at Kolorado in 2019 we had a small stage with an international line-up including Lahmacun show hosts only and also at Fekete Zaj Festival in two consecutive years in 2020 in 2021 with dj-sets.

Lahmacun’s digital universe has been developed entirely by our community. And it’s all open source, which means it is ready to be used by anyone who fancies it. The main starting point is our public GitHub repository, which contains the code of our website, the archivator engine (called arcsi) and the heart of our radio server (written in a language called Liquidsoap). Also, you’ll find there interesting analytics code and the implementation of our mobile app. If you’re interested in joining the IT team, send us code and/or drop an email to contact@lahmacun.hu

Lentil Lahmacun by Selin (vegan)

Lentil Lahmacun by Selin (vegan)

Recipe for 15 lahmacun.

For the dough: 600 gr flour, 375 ml warm water, 12 gr salt, ¼ tsp sugar, 5 gr dry instant yeast.

For the topping: 500 gr green lentils, 2 onion finely chopped, 6 garlic cloves, 5 fresh green and/or red paprika (pepper), 2 tomato, 60 ml oil, 4 tbsp lemon juice, fresh parsley and mint finely chopped (in all 150gr), 3 tbsp turkish pepper paste, season with black pepper, smoked paprika, chili, sumac, cumin, cinnamon.

Prep & serving: cook the lentils before until tender but not mushy. Chop all the vegetable ingredients very finely, you might even grind them. Bring a skillet to medium heat with oil and add the finely chopped onion and pepper. Saute until peppers and onions have softened. Then add the garlic and spices and saute for 2 minutes. Add the chopped tomato and pepper paste and reduce to a thick sauce. Once removed from heat add the fresh parsley and mint. Combine everything well and spread on the thinly rolled out dough, which can be then baked in the skillet (2-3 mins on very high heat, until edges are golden brown and crispy). Serving with lemon wedges, fresh parsley and sumac onion salad.

Also, thanks a lot for Alex from AudioTag.info (also author of AudioWatermarking.com) to support us with their technology to automatically create playlists of our stream.

Our logo is work of Máté Lakos. “DJ Lemon” is work by Zsanna Kili and Máté Lakos. Csenge Csató has contributed a lot to the design and concept of the current Lahmacun site. Some of our station IDs are produced by Nemerov.

All software of Lahmacun radio is hosted in the DigitalOcean cloud, for us a free service through the DigitalOcean for Nonprofits program.

Our studio’s fridge is filled with chilled Békanő lemonades and other yummy Italműhely beverages.
